Vegan Vietnamese At The Be Bep Pop-Up

I spent 45 minutes on two trains to get to the Be Bep pop-op at Honey’s, a mead bar out in deepest Bushwick. When I arrived there was a long line, and I waited roughly 20 minutes before placing my order. Then I waited another 30 minutes for my food to arrive. And just before I bit into my banh beo thap cam chay (vegan rice cakes), I wondered to myself if it would be worth it. Thankfully, one bite was all it took for me to relax. The rice cakes were soft and slippery, coated in a vegan nuoc mam. There was a dumpling filled with wood ear mushrooms, another spherical dumpling of pillowy rice flour, and crunchy bits of crouton to offset all of the soft textures. Also great was the dessert, a sweet pomelo pith and tapioca soup with coconut cream. Be Bep was well worth the long trek there (and back), I’m looking forward to more pop-ups from them. It was fun to get a taste of a completely different type of Vietnamese food than we usually get here in Brooklyn.

I also had a glass of one of Honey’s delicious house meads, made with cherries and sumac.

Follow Be Bep on Instagram for future pop-ups.
