There are a few square blocks in Bushwick where there are an overabundance of vegan restaurants. A few weeks ago I stopped by one of them – Hartbreakers – for one of their fried chicken sandwiches. For my first visit I had to order the namesake sandwich: a fried patty made of gluten topped with vegan cheddar, sambal mayo, pickles, and vegan honey. It was a delicious (if messy) sandwich, with just the right amount of heat and saltiness. I didn’t really pick up the honey flavor, which I think would have put it right over the top. There are plenty more sandwiches to try, but I think next time I’ll go for a three piece mushroom bucket. I’m a sucker for chicken-fried mushrooms.
